One of the ways in which we learn is vicariously; watching others and then modeling their actions or behavior. Parents, coaches, teachers, managers in business and all other types of leaders have a responsibility to model positive leadership. You never know who is watching.
Take a look at this enlightening video on how our leadership as parents affects our children. It's pretty powerful. I am interested in your thoughts.

I fully agree, that like kids follow their parents, employees also look at at their directors/managers/CEO's, observe their working style, behaviours and attitude.
In my work experience there is usually clear disconnect between what leaders say and what they practically do. Because of this message to the lower level is unclear and confusion always persists.

Thanks for your comments Salman. It is amazing the types of disconnects that exist.

Mike, I read this one and then saw your post on Video - Did you ever think that what you do as a leader says more than what you say? -- I have to say I practically cried. I thought how this also affects the workplace and how it revisits something we learned as children (do as I say, not as I do) - and how it has personally affected me in the workplace. How acting certain ways is so against my personal integrity yet in order to survive I may do it (CYA)... and when I dont? I'm called niaive, polly-anna, "that's not the way of the world in business"... maybe I am niaive...Thanks for the post. Wonderfully communicated.

Good video. Would be nice to see the other side too -- the positive stuff.

"Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear a word your saying" principle. I agree with you Mike, that showing a video of positive actions/modeling for children would be equally as effective.

I agree. That type of video would be a good follow up : )

This is a great video, and hopefully it is an eye-opener as to how our behavior as leaders affects the team. We have to be thoughtful and aware of what we model, from recognizing and celebrating success to how we manage those "difficult" customers. Leadership is powerful in the messages it sends and the modeling it induces; we need to be aware.

It doesn't really matter what you say and how many times you ask your subordinates/colleagues to do a thing in a particular way. They will still follow your style because action speaks louder than words. Very nice post.

Thanks Jane and Ashish for your comments! We should always be aware as leaders of what we ask others to do - period! Leadership is more about the shadow and what we leave.
