Bad Training Happens - Even Bad Leadership Training

Okay, I've been there, you've been there. Your sitting in leadership training listening to really, really bad training. The problem is in the words "listening to bad training." There are two big problems that I see with most leadership training (not the type I do of course - wink).

1. Too much of what I call Spray and Pray. Too much talking and hoping that trainees will retain what they learn when they leave training. Not enough interaction and application.

2. No accountability to applying what is learned after the training. People must be held accountable for applying what they learn to their jobs. No accountability equals little chance much will be applied.

I think you will appreciate the following old video clip of Father Guido Sarducci of Saturday Night Live fame titled the "Five Minute University."

Six Important Tips To Help a Leader or Boss Smile Less

The six tips below will ensure that you wipe any hint of a genuine smile off your face.

1. Believe that people don't like you. The more you believe that people don't like you, the more paranoid you will become that they are out to get you. This is sure to result in an unhappy countenance and ensure that your belief is realized!

2. Believe that there is much more negative in people's performance than positive. Why? Because if they were as perfect as you are they would be the boss, not you. Always looking for the negative is a great way to ensure that others smile less as well.

3. Believe that a bad day has everything to do with others and has nothing to do with you.You might think this would make you smile more because you are never to blame for your mood, but look carefully. Do you know people like this? How often do they genuinely smile?

4. Believe that rudeness makes you appear strong. At least you believe it makes you appear strong. And in your strength you will find it very difficult to have a genuine smile.

5. Believe that business is business and take yourself super seriously. Since you spend most of your life working it makes sense to be as unhappy and frowny as you possibly can be. Business is business and smiling and enjoying it means you aren't serious enough.

6. Believe that good hygiene is overrated. Do I have to explain?

But seriously folks, are you having trouble smiling and you want to smile more? Try these tips : ) 

Hug someone you care about.
Jump on the bed.
Dance and sing while working (it might bring smiles to others as well).
Look for the good in everything.
Check out your baby pictures.
Spend time with children.
Spend time with a puppy or kitten.
Think about someone who has had a huge positive influence in your life.
Enjoy the vivid colors of life and the changes in weather/seasons.
Write a list of everything you are grateful for.
Smile real big every morning in the mirror.

8 Important tips to help you waste time in meetings

Since most of us need time to waste, I thought it would be beneficial to my blogging audience to provide eight tips you must, must, must incorporate into your meetings. They are legend in most meetings and will help you waste as much time as possible, I guarantee it! 

1. Invite everyone. We all need to time to waste, and you wouldn't want to hurt anyones feelings by not including them. However, be careful about inviting people who might try to accomplish something during the meeting. On the other hand, make sure you invite people who tell good jokes, like to goof around and are generally entertaining.

2. Don't start the meeting until everyone has arrived. Starting a meeting on time would be rude to those who are late. Plus starting a meeting late helps everyone feel more comfortable about being late next time, which almost assures you will start the meeting late everytime.

3. Never, never, never have an agenda. Agendas create structure that can stifle tangents.

4. Leaders should do most if not all of the talking. Since the leader knows best, it makes the most sense that he or she talk the most.

5. Only those with "good" ideas should provide them. Anybody who submits a "stupid" idea should be laughed at, mocked and generally spit upon.

6. Give people freedom to "multitask" during meetings. Let everyone know at the start of the meeting that if they need to do other things such as texting, reading email or answering calls to go right ahead. It will make the meeting all the more productive for everyone.

7. Never make assignments. Assignments mean work will need to be done.

8. Never end a meeting on time. Doing so means you didn't apply items one through seven above!
