Is the Attitude of a Leader that Important? 3 Important Tips

Attitude of a leader

A Leaders Attitude Can Make the Difference!

Maybe you have mastered most of the important characteristics of a good leader, but if  you miss having the right attitude of a leader you will negate most of the good you have done or will do.

Winston Churchill once said: “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” Think about the last bad customer service interaction you had. Would a good attitude on the part of the person helping you have mattered? Most likely you would say it would have – though your own attitude could have had something to do with it as well <inserting a wink here>.

The attitude of a leader can make a huge difference! Want others to be positive with customers, team members or with you? Then your attitude better be positive. Want employees to respond favorable to a big change? Then your attitude better show confidence and enthusiasm. Want to truly grow those you lead? Then your attitude better reflect a belief in that person. I could go on and on.

The attitude of a leader is a choice. And it isn’t always easy. There are so many things that can change how we feel very quickly that can result in a lack of confidence, anger, sadness or just plain negativity. Here are three tips to help improve a leaders attitude.

1. Positive Affirmations. I heard it once said that nearly 90% of our thoughts are negative. These thoughts are referred to as A.N.T.s (Automatic Negative Thoughts), resulting in unhealthy feelings. Leaders ought to talk to themselves and others positively and begin to rid themselves of such negativity. Tell yourself “I am great,” “I am a strong leader” “I can do anything”; and focus on feeling good as you say these things. Then turn around and tell others how good they are. Find specific and sincere things that are positive about others and share them. By doing this the attitude of a leader can change dramatically.

2. Remind Yourself. Leaders should constantly remind themselves of every good thing they have ever accomplished. Whether it was a successful project that was led, a degree that was attained or a recognition that was received; there are lots of things that can be done to improve the attitude of a leader just by simply remembering the good things that have come to her or him in life. In addition leaders should constantly remind themselves of the positive qualities that helped them achieve great things.

3. Focus on your Vision. The greatest leaders realize that their vision trumps anything negative that happens. Nothing is built-in a day, let the vision excite you and continue to motivate you. Share it with enthusiasm.

These are three tips that have helped me in my attitude as a leader. What additional tips could you share about improving the attitude of a leader?
