leaders

Lack of accountability can be a big obstacle on teams. On many teams only the leader holds team members accountable. But on high performing teams, the team members hold each other accountable. When team members are focused on the results together, they are more likely to hold one another accountable. This is very common on sports team.

It doesn’t take an audience of hundreds at our beckon call to be a great leader. Sometimes it happens in the simplest and most humble surroundings. And in the case of this touching video it happens when a father decides to magnify his most important calling – fatherhood. It’s a labor of love that will affect you and make you want to do better as a human being. That’s the leadership piece.

Why do leaders become old school?

I recently read an article in the Harvard Business Blog on four star general and former US top commander in Afghanistan David D. McKiernan. He was recently replaced and forced out (fired) by a new commander, General Stanley McChrystal. Basically the article states that General McKiernan was “old school” (though he was generally recognized for having done an outstanding job) and not up to speed as his predecessor in diplomatic skills, press savviness, international politics and so forth. The question I have to ask is how General McKiernan became “old school?”

My son’s little league team lost in the playoffs last night. It was amazing they even made it that far. This was a team of castoffs from the start.

On Fridays I will post a video that has something inspiring around leadership. I am happy to post the first one today. It is a movie called “Forever Strong.” It is centered on the sport rugby and a teenage boy on that team who struggles with two different leadership styles – that of his father/coach and that of his new coach Larry Gelwix.
