Each of us has a need to feel valued, special and important. I believe it could be argued that there isn’t one of us who doesn’t have a desire to be told they are valuable to a family, company or organization.
Helping employees feel valued is key to their success and your success as a leader.
We are all part of this bigger human race. Not one of us is “more important” than another. Underneath the skin we all look the same, we are human. Each of us has needs, desires and dreams.
Leaders understand that everyone needs a helping hand from time to time. They take the time to nurture, develop and inspire others.
I love the following story I heard not too long ago. It is a great story to share with your staff and to help someone feel special. The attached video is a nice supplement to this story as well, and I hope you will take the time to watch it – it is powerful!
A number of years ago a recognized and popular speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $100.00 bill. With an audience of about 500 people he asked, “Is there someone who would like to take this home?” Of course many raised their hands across the audience.
He then said, “I have every intention of giving this to one of you. However, before I do that let me do this…” He proceeded to crumple it up like a piece of trash and asked, “Anyone want it now?” Just as many hands went up again.
The speaker then took the $100.00 bill and threw it to the floor and stomped on it with his foot several times. “Crumpled and dirty, anyone still want it?” he said. Hands continued to go up in the air.
He then taught, “Friends, you have learned a great lesson in your own personal worth and value. It didn’t matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it. Why? Because it didn’t decrease in value., it was still worth $100.00.”
All of us are important. Each of us has value. Many times in our life we are dropped, crumpled and stomped into the dirt. We may feel a lack of self-worth or at the very least a lack of self-confidence. But regardless of how many times you are dropped, crumbled and stomped, you have the same value.
We all belong to one Supreme Being who is cheering for us. I hope that as leaders we will cheer for each other as well.
